Canon McCloud, our guest preacher on Sept. 19, has invited us to join her for a zoom conversation!
Why beloved community? Simply… because it is God’s vision for creation. As followers of Jesus Christ, creating beloved community should be one of the basic tenets of our faith. That’s basically what Jesus told the young seeker who asked him what was the greatest commandment. Jesus tells him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39). Jesus welcomed people into a countercultural, self-giving community of love with God at the center (“The Church Cracked Open”).
Beloved community is not some religious babble or some catch phrase for a moment in the life of the Church. It is God’s perfect love calling us to a way of life with one another. It is a way of love that brings the many and varied voices and gifts into a community where transformation of heart, spirit, and mind is possible for all. Doing the work of racial healing, reconciliation and justice is an integral part of creating beloved community. It is that place where we are called back to the essence of who we are because of whose we are and remembering what we are here for… to be the body of Christ in the world. A beloved community that will proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ, who will act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly just as Jesus did and who calls us to do likewise.
